A normal audio file is a single mixed recording — all instruments blended together. "Stem separation" uses an AI model (such as Demucs, developed by Meta's researchers) that has learned what drums, bass, vocals and other instruments sound like, and pulls them apart into separate tracks called stems. A few years ago this needed the original studio files; today the AI reconstructs them from the finished song surprisingly well.

How to separate a song for free, step by step

Good to know about quality: AI separation is impressive but not perfect — depending on the song you may hear slight "bleed" between tracks. The cleaner the original recording, the cleaner the stems.
