How to Get a Good Drum Sound From a Phone Recording

Drums are the hardest thing to capture on a phone: the kick disappears, the room booms, and the cymbals turn harsh. Here's how to record them better โ€” and how to rescue drums you've already recorded.

Why phone-recorded drums sound bad

A phone mic has a tiny capsule and automatic gain. On loud drum transients it distorts, it exaggerates the boomy low-mids of the room, and it makes cymbals splashy and harsh. The good news: most of this is fixable โ€” partly at the source, partly afterwards.

Recording tips (at the source)

Distance beats closeness

Don't put the phone right against the kick or snare. Set it up elevated and a couple of metres in front of the kit so the drums blend into one balanced sound instead of one drum dominating.

Avoid clipping

Do a loud test hit first. If it sounds crackly, move the phone back โ€” clipped drums can't be repaired later.

Point away from cymbals

If cymbals overpower everything, aim the phone slightly lower, towards the kick and snare, rather than up at the cymbals.

Fixing drums afterwards

This is what turns a flat phone recording into a punchy kit. In plain terms:

The shortcut: MixMyJam does all of this automatically and includes drum presets like Fat Kick, Cracking Snare and Anti-Mud. If your recording is drums only, pick the "single instrument โ†’ drums" mode; if it's a full band take, use stem mode and adjust the drum track on its own.

Frequently asked questions

Why do drums sound bad when recorded on a phone?

Phone mics distort on loud hits and over-emphasise boomy low-mids while making cymbals harsh. Placement plus EQ (more kick and snare, less mud) fixes most of it.

Where should I put the phone?

Elevated and a couple of metres in front of the kit โ€” not right against a drum, which makes it dominate and clip.

Can I fix drums that are already recorded?

Yes. Noise reduction, de-reverb and EQ improve an existing recording a lot. MixMyJam does this automatically with dedicated drum presets.
